The RGM-79[G] GM Sniper is a specialized variant of the GM Ground Type, first appearing in the OVA Mobile Suit Gundam: The 08th MS Team. While it shares the same basic performance as the GM Ground Type, the GM Sniper features enhanced sensor accuracy and a modified operating system optimized for its long-range beam rifle. Its cooling equipment and power transmission system are also fine-tuned to support sustained sniping operations, complemented by a distinct color scheme.

During the One Year War, at least four GM Ground Types from the Kojima Battalion were converted into GM Snipers. These units played a crucial role in the destruction of Zeon's experimental mobile armor Apsaras III and the RX-79[G]Ez-8 Gundam Ez8 piloted by Shiro Amada.
