The Fw190A series was developed as a support fighter for the Bf109, and became a masterpiece fighter that surpassed the Bf109.

The D series was developed with a liquid-cooled Jumo 213 engine to compensate for the only weakness of the Fw190A series, which was that the engine power dropped sharply when it rose to an altitude of 6,000m or more. However, the target improvement in high-altitude performance was not sufficient.

However, because the flight performance at medium altitudes and below was significantly improved, the German Air Force decided to adopt it as a new medium-altitude fighter, and production of the first mass-produced D series, the D-9, began in August 1944.

The D series had seven types (including plans only), from the D-9 to the D-15, and the D-9 was the type that was produced the most. It was called the LANGNASEN-DORA because of its long, slender nose, and the rear fuselage was extended and the vertical tail enlarged to compensate for the longer nose.

In addition, the canopy of the late production D-9 came standard with a Garland Haube, which had a large bulge at the top.

The Papegaistaffel (Parrot Squadron) was organized within the elite JV44 (44th Fighter Group) led by Lieutenant General Garland as a unit to provide air cover (aerial support) for the Me262 jet fighter during takeoff and landing.

The flashy red with white stripes paint on the underside of the fuselage was intended to avoid accidental fire from friendly anti-aircraft guns.
